Luke will be on Broadway
Luke MacFarlane and Patrick Breen Join Cast of Broadway's Normal Heart
By Andrew Gans
28 Mar 2011
Producer Daryl Roth announced March 28 that Patrick Breen (Next Fall) and Luke MacFarlane ("Brothers and Sisters") have joined the cast of Larry Kramer’s ground-breaking play, The Normal Heart, which will make its Broadway premiere beginning April 19 at the John Golden Theatre.
Breen will play Mickey Marcus, and MacFarlane will play the roles of Craig Donner and Grady. The two actors join the previously announced Ellen Barkin as Dr. Emma Brookner, John Benjamin Hickey as Felix Turner, Joe Mantello as Ned Weeks, Lee Pace as Bruce Niles and Jim Parsons as Tommy Boatwright.
Joel Grey, who is currently co-starring in the Broadway revival of Anything Goes, will direct the 12-week engagement, which will officially open April 27. George C. Wolfe will help supervise the presentation through opening night.
The design team includes David Rockwell (sets), Martin Pakledinaz (costumes), David Weiner (lighting), David Van Tieghem (sound) and Batwin & Robin (projections).
"The story of a city in denial," The Normal Heart, according to press notes, "unfolds like a real-life political thriller -- as a tight-knit group of friends refuses to let doctors, politicians and the press bury the truth of an unspoken epidemic behind a wall of silence. First produced by Joseph Papp at New York’s Public Theater, the play was a critical sensation and a seminal moment in theater history. So ahead of its time was this play that many of the core issues it addresses – including gay marriage, the healthcare system and, of course, AIDS – are just as relevant today as they were when it first premiered."
The Normal Heart will support a group of dedicated nonprofit organizations, including The Actors Fund and Friends In Deed, among others.
Producers are Daryl Roth and Paul Boskind.
Tickets, priced $26.50-$116.50, are available via Telecharge.com, by calling (212) 239-6200, or in person at the John Golden Theatre box office (252 West 45th Street).

An article from AfterElton
[Source]
The AfterElton.com Gay List
Posted by AfterElton.com Staff on March 14, 2011
One of our favorite mantras around the AfterElton offices is “because visibility matters.” Indeed, the idea that gay and bisexual men need to be visible, both to ourselves and to the wider culture, is one of the principle reasons AfterElton.com even exists. After all, it is only by being visible to family, friends and the world that we’ve been able to overcome the stereotypes and bigotry used to justify discrimination against the GLBT community.
That quest for visibility explains why we have done so many polls including the AfterElton Hot 100, the Fifty Greatest Gay Movies, the Top 50 Gay TV Characters, and the 50 Best Gay Books. After all, it’s not as if Entertainment Weekly is going to ask gay and bisexual men which guys we think are the hottest, which movies mean the most to us or, in the case of our latest poll, which celebrities we most admire.
But guess what? When we do so, much of the rest of the world tends to notice. The results of our Hot 100 poll are always reported in dozens of countries, and winners of other AE polls are often mentioned in all sorts of articles.
But why a poll about out celebrities? For better or worse, celebrities are some of the most influential people on the planet, and their fame allows them to either make the world a better place (Oprah Winfrey, anyone?) or act like total jackasses in front of the entire planet. (Way to go, Charlie Sheen!)
By highlighting which out gay and bisexual men our readers most admire, we celebrate not just those men, but how far the entire gay community has come. After all, it wasn’t so long ago that finding 50 out gay and bisexual men for a list like this would have been pretty hard to do.
It certainly isn’t any more. Thousands of AfterElton readers voted in our poll, nominating over 300 different gay/bi men they admired. That’s a lot of visible gay and bisexual men.
And note: we're not even including all the out women there are. (We left that poll to our sisters over at AfterEllen.com, and if you're interested you can find their results here.)
The men who made the top fifty in our poll were diverse in many ways, including not just the obvious actors and musicians who rule pop culture, but also includes two politicians, three athletes, a soldier, two writers, a sex advice columnist and a gay rights activist.
Actually, almost everyone on the list could be called a gay rights activist, and not just because they have all made the decision to be out. Rather, almost every man in the top fifty is someone who has done something to further the cause for gay equality, whether it be fighting Don’t Ask/Don’t Tell, speaking up for marriage equality, or speaking out on the issue of gay teens who are bullied.
Some, like Sir Ian McKellen, have been doing it for decades, while others are brand new to the fight, but no less important or visible for that.
Alas, the results weren’t terribly racial diverse, which highlights an ongoing problem: limited GLBT visibility in minority communities. But our list did have some men of color including two Hispanic men, three Asians and two African American celebrities.
Enough pontificating about why this list matters. We’re pretty sure you already get it. It’s on to the results, starting at number 50 and working our way to number 1!

Easy as Pie
Anyone who says “Easy as Pie” has never made a pie from scratch.
But like I’ve said all along slow food is good food and I’m sure that frozen pies are delicious, but I’ll take one baked with love by a real woman named Mrs. Smith any day of the week. Maybe the phrase “easy as pie” came about because pie is so easy to eat….
But I know that making pies can be time consuming. If you make an apple pie, for example, I know what it’s like to face a huge pile of apples looking to be peeled and sliced.
And some friends (you know who you are Justin Walker!) have criticized my blog for featuring recipes that are too complicated. So, for Justin (and anyone else like him) here is a recipe that you can make – well perhaps “assemble” is a better word – using things you can easily buy in a grocery store. Of course I encourage you to make everything from scratch, but if you can’t do that feel free to just go to the store, buy these five simple ingredients and throw together a dessert that will dazzle. Even better? It’s a simple recipe that you can even get the kids involved with… Maybe I‘ll make this with Olivia?
(Since I am really from Mississippi – and no doubt have friends there who read this blog – my apologies in advance for bastardizing a recipe so beloved in my home state…)
EASY MISSISSIPPI MUD PIE
Ingredients
· 1 store-bought chocolate pie crust
· 1 quart coffee ice cream, softened
· 1 tub whipped cream
· 1 package slivered/sliced almonds
· 1 can chocolate syrup
Instructions
1. Put softened ice cream into piecrust and smooth.
2. Pour chocolate syrup over smoothed ice cream until the top is covered with a layer of the syrup (you will not need the whole can).
3. Place in freezer until set (approx. 20 min.).
4. Spread on whipped cream (enough to cover pie).
5. Drizzle with chocolate syrup, and sprinkle with almonds. Return to freezer to set for about 1 hour.

Macfarlane received the Visibility Award at HRC's most recent Chicago Gala.
Excerpts of his HRC address follow.
"During my first week in L.A., I was invited to my first Hollywood party. It was a sprawling contemporary home, high in the Hollywood Hills. And I knew almost no one there, and I wandered around large rooms a bit lost, with a drink in my hand, looking for someone to talk to. Eventually, a pretty blonde casting assistant recognized me from an audition and called me over and introduced me to a group of her friends. We talked for a bit, and she asked how I was adjusting to life in Los Angeles — how my driving skills were, and the superiority of Los Angeles sushi over New York Sushi.
"But then she said to me, 'I heard a rumor, Luke, I heard you were gay. Are you gay?' I think my heart skipped a beat, and I implusively responded, 'No, I'm not gay.' I felt sick to my stomach. And somehow, I agreed to have a date with her. This might not seem like a shocking lie, coming from the lips of a newly arrived actor in Hollywood. Lord knows, there is a rich legacy of gay male actor going on dates with women. But the truth was, up until that point, I believed I was comfortable and secure in my sexuality. I had been living as an onpenly gay person in New York for years. Why did I feel like I had to say, 'I'm stright,' in that moment? Coming out for me had been relatively painless. When I sat down with my oldest buddied and told them I was gay, they hugged me and they said. 'This doesn't change anything.' When I choked out the words, 'I'm gay,' to my mom and dad, the first thing they said was 'We love you.' And then my mother told me that she still expected grandkids from me! [Laughter.]
"Any difficulties I had in coming out were internal. My struggles were mostly within myself. The immediate world around me was incredibly supportive; it couldn't have been more supportive. I was raised and educated in a place where I felt safe and secure, I was never bullied, and my family encouraged me to self investigation. What was shocking about that lie that I told that night in Hollywood Hills was how easily I could take all the steps I had made toward making the best and open version of myself back. Because in that moment, in a few words, I slipped back into the closet.
"It was then that I realized how fragile my resolve was. And that if I was going to truly be gay, I was going to have to come out every single day of my life.
"It's something that we do in small ways. Like asking for a room with single bed when we're on vacation with our parents. And it's something that we do in large ways, like telling our commanding officers that we're gay. For the past few years, I have been taking class in fine wood-working... most of my classmates are retired contractors, firemen and engineers, and most of them have never met an actor before. Each class starts with an itroduction. And I say, 'My name is Luke Macfarlane and I'm an actor.' And they say, 'Oh, would I know you from anything?' And I say, 'Well, right now I'm on a show called "Brothers and Sisters."'... And they say 'Oh, "Brothers and Sisters!"' And then they say, 'Well, what do you play?' And I say, 'I play the husband of one of the brothers.' 'Ooohhh' is usually the response. Recently, one of my shop mates wandered over to me and admitted that he had seen my show because his wife watches it. And then he asked me what it was like kissing a guy. I told him I liked it. But I could see that I was starting to make him nervous, and then he asked me, 'So are you gay in real life?' And I said, 'Yes, I am.' And I swear to you that it was like coming out for the first time all over again.
"I wish I could say at the point, he said, 'Cool.' But insted, he became uncomfortable and he told me that I was the first gay person he had ever met. For the remainder of the class, he kept his distance, and I was obviously disappointed by the way that conversation went down.
"I would like to think that on some level, I helped move his acceptance of gay people just a tiny step forward. And that is all we can do.
