Interview: Luke Macfarlane - The Backlot

[Source]

Interview: Luke Macfarlane on “The Night Shift,” Gay Military Couples, “Brothers & Sisters” & More

by Jim Halterman | June 30, 2014

If you’ve been watching NBC’s new hospital drama The Night Shift, we’ve heard mention of Rick, the BF of semi-closeted Drew (Brendan Fehr). In this week’s episode we finally get to meet him, and it’s not under the best circumstances.

In the episode, Rick is brought into the hospital for more of a medical than personal reason and Drew is immediately not comfortable having his personal life crash up against his professional life, where he’s tried very hard to keep the fact that he’s gay close to the vest.

Luke Macfarlane plays Rick and the Brothers & Sisters alum talked to TheBacklot about the role, how gay couples in the military handle their relationship, working with Fehr as well as what else he’s been up to.  Let’s check in with one of our favorite out actors.

TheBacklot: Where are Rick and Drew in terms of their relationship? They’ve been apart but is it a pretty solid relationship or is it a more tenuous relationship?

Luke Macfarlane: I think they’re pretty solid. I think they’re actually representative of a lot of the military guys that I’m actually friends with in that they have these really clear boundaries about what can and can’t be discussed, but I think that they really value each other and they bond over this sort of separate life that they have together. I think it’s healthy. They definitely vacation, they spend time together. I don’t think necessarily anybody’s bringing them home to meet Mom and Dad, but like I said, it’s really a good representation at least of a few of the gay, military couples that I know that both happen to be enlisted. But I think they’re pretty healthy, other than the distance between them, which technology has made easy.

Being out is still an issue in the military for some, but it sounds like even though ‘don’t ask, don’t tell’ is gone, it’s still not perfect in the army. Is that how you see it?

LM: You know, it’s such a complicated issue. Frankly, I’m not entirely well-equipped, but I’ll offer some insight. I think that it’s like anybody in the world. It always takes a certain amount of courage to just say, ‘this is what I am.’ People are very reluctant to define themselves. It takes a lot to say, ‘I’m this, I’m that.’ We know it’s okay theoretically to be gay, but sometimes you just don’t want to be known or seen. You want to keep your secrets. We do this in all kinds of aspects of our lives and, especially in the military culture, I found that any sort of expression itself is kind of frowned upon. I mean, they all wear the same thing, they have the same haircut and a lot of them have the same interests, so to say, ‘I’m this,’ is not necessarily a good thing or they’ve been taught that it’s not a good thing if that makes a little bit of sense. That’s my little two cents on it. It’s not that anyone’s going to get kicked out, it’s just it takes a certain stepping outside of the fold that’s not always something they want to do. They want to be with their unit.

We’ve seen on this show, Drew is very bullish and has a lot of rage that he gets out through his mixed martial arts. Do you think Rick kind of balances out that more aggressive side of Drew?

LM: I think that would make sense. I mean, like most couples, he’s sort of the gardener and I think you’re right, I’m sure they balance each other out…I will say this. There might be sort of a role reversal, with Drew as the caretaker. My rage might come out a little bit later [and] Drew might have to sit on his anger for a bit while I deal with mine.

With Brendan Fehr in this week’s episode of The Night Shift.
What can you say about working with Brendan and how you guys worked on the relationship between your characters?

LM: Brendan, he’s great. He’s a fellow Canadian. I really enjoyed him. He’s very serious about his work and really enjoys talking about the scenes. I was tremendously impressed with him. He really did his work. Everybody really did their work. I think sometimes you show up on sets and you can just tell that everybody’s a little bit tired. Everyone was just really, really working hard, and Brendan especially. He’s great and very handsome.

It’s funny because people know him from Roswell, and now it’s like, ‘oh, he grew up to be a hunky guy!’

LM: Yes, totally! Isn’t that weird, you know? We watch people grow up on TV. It’s very strange.

Speaking of good-looking guys, you got to work with Scott Wolf on the show, which is exciting.

LM: Yes! Scott Wolf. Another good looking fella. I really liked him too. I actually interacted with him a few years back and it’s always that nice thing when someone really remembers you, and they’re like, ‘oh, yes, Luke, we met when so and so and so and so’ and when someone’s famous like Scott Wolf, you go like, ‘oh really, you remembered me, how nice,’ so it shows good character.

From what you know, will we be seeing more of Rick in the future?

LM: Well, that’s all I’ve filmed to be perfectly honest with you. If the show continues to do well, which I understand it’s doing very well, I think they want to bring me back, and hopefully they can.

I hope so. I  liked seeing you on my TV again.

LM: Oh, thank you. I like being on TV. I like being on network TV.

Luke Macfarlane and Matthew Rhys in Brothers & Sisters
Tell me, it’s been several years since Brothers & Sisters was on the air, but safe to say you still hear from people about the show?

LM: I do, yes. It’s very nice, yes. I had a really nice experience just the other day. I was walking out of an audition with these two other people that I had just been auditioning against, and this lady passed me on the street, and she said, ‘no disrespect to the other two of you, but I just have to say I’m such a huge fan of Luke.’ And I turned to the people beside me, and I said, ‘I swear to God, I didn’t tell her to say that.’

If the right role came along would you want to do another series like Brothers & Sisters or another drama. I know you did a comedy [Satisfaction] last year in Canada.

LM: I did and that was a really fun experience. Yes, I mean, you’re always looking for the opportunity and kind of hoping…we were so blessed with Brothers & Sisters. It was just such a wonderful role for me and such a wonderful cast and show, but yes, I would be very happy to do that and hopefully something comes along, I keep hoping for it.

You’ve played a mix of gay and straight roles. Have you seen a change in the last five or ten years since we have out actors like Neil Patrick Harris playing straight roles? You played a straight role on Satisfaction, for example.

LM: That’s right and I think that that’s why I got into acting, you know, to play all kinds of different roles. Yes, it’s really exciting, and I think the other fields are opening up. I think Michael Sam has been just a fascinating and an amazing thing to watch unfold. Yes, I really do believe it’s easier and I’m so grateful for that. It’s going to make for a better world, a better country, I think.

Macfarlane with his Satisfaction co-stars, Ryan Belleville & Leah Renee
What would your advice be to a young actor, or not even young actor, but somebody who was out in their personal life but not in their professional life?

LM: Oh, God, Jim, that’s a hard question. It’s so personal. I would say that my education by my family was very special and different and accepting and I don’t know if that is the right thing for everybody, because everybody has different families and different friends and different circumstances. You really just have to figure it out for yourself, I think

What else is going on with you, Luke, besides The Night Shift?

LM: I filmed a new movie for the Hallmark Channel, which is a sort of romantic comedy so I’m excited about that, and I think that’s coming out later in the summer, maybe in August…it’s called The Memory Book.  And I have my fingers crossed for another television show.

Anything in the personal life we should know about, any dating or marriages or anything going on?

LM: On marriages and dating, no. You know, Jim, I never talk about my personal life. I’m a healthy and happy guy.

The Night Shift airs Tuesdays at 10pm on NBC.

AfterElton's Top 50 Favorite TV Characters

AfterElton's Top 50 Favorite TV Characters
Posted by AfterElton.com Staff on February 27, 2012

16. Kevin Walker, Brothers & Sisters (Matthew Rhys)
[On Air: 2006-2011] We'll be forever thankful to creator Jon Robin Baitz for giving us the first fully formed and realistic gay male character on broadcast television. There had been gay characters prior to Kevin, sure, but on broadcast TV at least they were either sanitized one-note characters, surreal comic creations or sad and noble victims struggling with their sexual orientation. Kevin Walker on the other hand was nobody's victim, and for the most part his orientation was a non-issue.

He had a few memorable relationships, including a closeted soap actor and a smoldering preacher, but his relationship with Scotty remains the most complete and satisfying gay relationship in TV drama history, and will probably never be matched.

20. Scotty Wandell, Brothers & Sisters (Luke Macfarlane)

[On Air: 2006-2011] The other half of TV's greatest gay relationship, Scotty started out as a flaky and irresponsible cater-waiter with a penchant for bad hair and living in his car. His initial hook-up with Kevin led to a friendship that turned to love. Their relationship has survived Kevin's family, infidelity, Kevin's family, adoption drama, Kevin's family, surrogacy problems. Kevin's family. But through it all, Scotty remained good-hearted and sensitive, and was able to balance out his type A partner's rigidity, creating the greatest gay relationship in TV history.

Personally...

Personally, it's sad to see the header picture of " The GAYS Of DAYTIME" without Kevin & Scotty. I still miss them so much.

Marriage ends with "Brothers & Sisters" cancellation

Matthew Rhys, Luke Macfarlane Marriage Ends With 'Brothers & Sisters' Cancellation

On Top Magazine Staff
Published: May 15, 2011

ABC split apart Matthew Rhys and Luke Macfarlane on Friday with the announcement that it has canceled Brothers & Sisters.

According to Michael Ausiello's TV Line, the show won't return next year.

“Though, as Deadline [Hollywood] reported, the network was trying to find a way to bring back B&S for an abridged final season, in the end, the suits elected to free up their post-Desperate Housewives time slot for a new show. As a result, last Sunday's B&S season finale is now, retroactively, the series' finale.”

Rhy's Kevin Walker and Macfarlane's Scotty Wandell married on the season 2 finale of the family drama and remained the show's most durable couple.

During the show's fifth and final season, producers capped off Kevin's evolution from a down-with-love closeted corporate lawyer to a family man by giving the couple two children: daughter Olivia and son Daniel.

The men adopted Olivia after their surrogate claimed she had miscarried their baby. But in the show's final episodes, its revealed that Daniel wasn't lost and he joins his fathers.

ABC Cancels "Brothers & Sisters"
Posted by Michael Jensen, Editor on May 13, 2011

When it comes to the television shows that had the biggest impact on AfterElton.com readers in this site's early days, there are two series that truly stand out in terms of GLBT visibility.
The first is Torchwood. The second is Brothers & Sisters, which makes it just that much sadder to announce that according to TVLine.com B&S has just been canceled. While the show was never a ratings juggernaut, it had done well enough this season that there was much speculation that the show would be given an abbreviated sixth and final season.
Kevin and Scotty

But that's not to be. It's hard to overstate what an impact the show first made on many gay viewers when it debuted back in 2006. Created by Jon Robin Baitz, an out gay man, the show included Kevin Walker (Matthew Rhys) an out and proud gay character who would go on to date, have a love life, and eventually a family with his husband Scotty Wandell (Luke Macfarlane).
To my mind, the show really marked the start of what has been a pretty strong resurgence in the development of fully fleshed out, complicated GLBT characters and it deserves credit for making same-sex affection and relationships normal for millions of viewers who might otherwise never see gay people falling in love, getting married and having kids.
No, the show wasn't perfect by a longshot, but I'll certainly miss seeing Kevin and Scotty cuddling on their couch.

I totally agree with Michael Jensen. For the moment, I don't know where I can see Luke again except a theatre where I can't go. I hope he will appear soon on some TV shows.

Brothers & Sisters... Cancelled

As almost all of us expected, Brothers & Sisters is cancelled. I really loved to see Luke as Scotty though, I guess it's time to move on.

UPDATE: 'Brothers & Sisters' Canceled, As Is 'V'
By NELLIE ANDREEVA | Friday May 13, 2011 @ 11:48am PDT

UPDATE: It's official, there will be no sixth season of ABC's family drama Brothers and Sisters. And V won't return for a third season either. ABC just made the calls.

PREVIOUS: Barring any last-minute miracle, it looks like this is the end of the road for ABC's veteran family drama Brothers and Sisters. There had been a serious effort by ABC and producing studio ABC Studios to find a price point at which they could bring the show back for an abbreviated sixth and final season. There have been talks with star Calista Flockhart to return for six episodes next season. Last May, Brothers and Sisters clinched a last-minute 18-episode order that was subsequently expanded to 22 episodes. But the indications are, with so many drama pilots scoring high in testings and screenings this year, ABC is ready to say good-bye to the Walker clan.

The Week in Gay TV: Lady Gaga Brings the Monster Ball to HBO, and a Walker Wedding Concludes The "Brothers & Sisters" Season
Posted by Lyle Masaki on May 6, 2011

It's time for another Walker family celebration Sunday when Sarah and Luc get married on Brothers & Sisters' season finale. The long-running drama has been on the bubble for most of the season, so this week's finale looks like it'll try to end the season on a satisfying note if it is the last we see of the Walker clan.

No new season?

Rachel Griffiths talked about Brothers & Sisters on a show. It sounds like Brothers & Sisters has been cancelled.

Did Rachel Griffiths announce Brothers & Sisters is axed?
By David Knox on May 2, 2011

Last night surprise Logie presenter Rachel Griffiths appeared to indicate US drama Brothers and Sisters is about to be axed.

During a chat with host Shane Bourne, she was asked about her plans to direct her first feature length movie in Australia next year, called B-Model.

“I’m soon to be unemployed so I checked in with Centrelink and I don’t know if anybody’s noticed they’re cracking down on the whole welfare thing. So I went to see Centrelink and said, ‘Looks like I’m out of a job and wanna sign up.’

“And they said, ‘You have to be looking for work.’ So I said I’m trying to direct a movie, and it’s all gone crazy.”

When joking about her attempts to find work she added, “I looked them in the eye and said, ‘I think I am going to be unemployed,’ and they didn’t seem to be very warm.”

ABC drama Brothers and Sisters is yet to be renewed for the US Fall season and is one of the shows tipped to go under the axe.
It's unlikely having a new season.

Pic Post! A First Look at the "Brothers & Sisters" Finale
Posted by Dennis Ayers, Managing Editor on April 28, 2011

There are only two episodes left of the fifth season of Brothers & Sisters, and we still haven't heard if the show will be returning for a sixth. The series has been on a creative roll of late and the ratings are okay... and yet with 109 episodes in the can and major characters departed, it's starting to feel like the end of the road for this shows.  (Thank goodness snicks will probably soon have Days of Our Lives to liveblog. Idle recappers are the devil's work.)
If the end of Brothers & Sisters is indeed upon us, then judging from these advance photos of the May 1st and May 8th episodes at least, longtime fans will be getting some closure.
For instance, in "For Better or for Worse" (to air May 1st) we see actress Marika Dominczykreturn as Tyler. She and Justin were a couple way back in season one. Remember, she was a hotel manager and got him that job as a bellhop-- which he promptly lost. Justin really loved her, but she sensibly had to break up with him because of his depression and drug addiction.
Well, Justin has cleaned up his act, and from the photos below, looks like a spark is still there between these two characters. Maybe she'd be a good love interest for him to ride off into the sunset with?
From ABC's official description, here's what else to look forward to in this episode: "After Sarah confronts Brody about his being her father, she decides she no longer wants him to be a part of her life or Nora's, but Nora just can't seem to let him go. Meanwhile, Olivia struggles with the new addition of baby Daniel to the family."

The photos that follow are all from the May 8th finale, "Walker Down the Aisle:" As Sarah and Luc's nuptials approach, plans go horribly awry and the Walkers learn several surprising lessons about the real meaning of family.

Yes, they're totally laughing at your bridesmaid dress, Kitty.
Looks like Sarah might be getting some closure with bio Dad Brody (Beau Bridges) before the episode is over.
Either impromptu musical number...
or all the Walker men have become zombies.

Brothers & Sisters S5E20

"Father Unknown"

This episode was directed by Matthew Rhys.

I actually agree with Scotty about Michelle. I know many people think Scotty shouldn't have met Michelle behind Kevin, and shouldn't have promised anything, but as he said exactly, because it was easy to imagine that Kevin would ruin everything with his anger.

Brothers & Sisters S5E19

"Wouldn't It Be Nice"

Judging from former episodes (S4E18-19), Scotty is the biological father of the baby.
[S4E19] Do you remember this scene?
Scotty: Oh, my God, that's why he wasn't there. We had our, uh, second implantation today. I waited with Michelle for two hours.
Sarah: Oh, God.
Scotty: I kept telling the doctor, "He'll be here, just give him ten more minutes." I mean, he didn't even call. Do you know where he is now?
======
Kevin: I ruined his life, Scotty. He was a kid. Oh, my God, the implantation. I'm so sorry.
Scotty: It's okay.
Kevin: It's not okay, l...
Scotty: Yes, it is. I went through with it.
Kevin: You did?
Scotty: We had to. We would have lost the embryos. Kevin.

[S4E20]
Kevin: Did Michelle call you too?
Scotty: Yes.
Kevin: I mean, she still has to have another blood test.
Scotty: Right. She has to wait to see if her HCG doubles.
Kevin: Right, but halfway pregnant?
Scotty: So we can be happy?
Kevin: Halfway happy?
Scotty: All the way happy?
Kevin: All the way happy.
======
Kevin: Halfway pregnant.
Scotty: Halfway pregnant.

Take a look and make your best guess! But be warned, these are SPOILERS!

Here's the synopsis for the April 17th episode "Wouldn't it be Nice." (oh, and in case you don't recall, Michelle is the surrogate that Kevin and Scotty once tried and failed to conceive with.)
"Nora finally gives in to her feelings for Brody which leads to a spontaneous romantic getaway. Meanwhile Sarah and Luc closely consider growing their family, and a chance encounter with Michelle raises Scotty's suspicions about her whereabouts for the past several months."
"Oh, here comes Michelle the surrogate. If things had worked out with her, we wouldn't have needed you,
and you'd be in the orphanage right now fighting that singing red-haired girl for a piece of moldy bread."

"I'm not nervous ... why do you think I look nervous? You've got nerve saying I look nervous.
Who are you, the frickin' nervous police!"

"What's wrong? All I asked is if you wanted to take some of my frozen yogurt for later."

The April 24th episode "Father Unknown" pretty much confirms what we suspected.
"Parenthood is questionable for more than one member of the Walker family, as Justin keeps a closely guarded secret about the true paternal identity of one of his siblings and Scotty makes a shocking discovery that will bring a new life into the Walker family fold."
So what do you think the big discovery is? Have at it, but PLEASE don't put your spoiler ideas in your comment title!

"I'll bet Kevin would love to see my shadow puppet"

"Well, I have always wanted to visit Florida."

"Stupid Earthling! The invasion of the Katy Perry's has begun, and soon we will dominate!"

"I'm sorry, you lost me after 'turkey baster.' "
